Grape Note: Wine Myth #6: Zinfandel is a pink (Blush) wine

Zinfandel is a red grape vareital that has produced a popular pink (blush) wine, White Zinfandel. The wine is created by pressing the grapes and collecting the juice immediately without allowing it to remain in contact with the skins. The wine is normally not stored in any barrels but in stainless steel. It is a "cash cow" for the wineries in that the storage of the wine is usually limited to the time it takes to complete the fermentation process. The wine is typically light in body with a slight strawberry/current nose. A good example is Berringer's White Zinfandel. Be sure not to purchase a bottle of White Zinfandel with an orange or brown tint. That is a sign the wine has aged or exposed to heatwhich is not a positive element for White Zinfandel. White Zin should be consumed with in a year that it is released. Zinfandel makes an outstanding red wine too. But that's another story.
