This glossary is intended to help familiarize you with terms and abbreviations used in this directory.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE): Basic literacy and math skills as taught in California adult school programs.
ADULT LITERACY PROVIDER: A provider of literacy skills training, including English as a Second Language (ESL), available to adults over 16 not enrolled in grades K-12.
ADULT SCHOOL: Associated with local school districts and funded by the California Department of Education, adult schools provide education in 10 program areas, including basic education, ESL, civics and vocational and other classes free to adult residents.
AMNESTY: Programs providing legalization assistance under the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), often including an educational component.
