South Sacramento also supports national and international projects through participation and giving to the Rotary International Foundation. Members host Group Study Exchange and Rotary Youth Exchange participants and support those going to other countries. Rotarians also provide support for Ambassadorial Scholars who go abroad to study.
South Sacramento Rotary also participates in “PolioPlus,” Rotary’s international campaign to eradicate polio. Since Rotary and partner agencies formed the global polio eradication initiative in 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced by a projected 99 percent—from 350,000 in 1988 to fewer than 1300 in 2004. Rotary members have also helped provide wheelchairs for those in need around the world.
Through the Foundation, South Sacramento Rotary participates in numerous other projects throughout the world. Clean water, literacy, poverty and hunger, and health programs—South Sacramento has supported them directly and indirectly and is continually looking for new ways to make the world a better place for those less fortunate.
